I always like the Niekros. You never knew what they were going to pull out of their ‘bag of tricks.’ Even without his tricks I think they were still good pitchers. I liked them.
Now someone please tell me why catchers are allowed to frame the ball. This is not cheating?

I don’t think they’d be as successful today as every time someone sneezes the balls are tossed - I’d like to have a cut in what clubs are paying for baseballs.
Years ago pitchers weren’t allowed fingers in the mouth. Now they have them every pitch .
They had a lot of charm, those brothers. Everyman heroes, in my eyes. I think you are right about the struggles the various ball manipulators would have today. Every ball is individually stamped with a unique ID and as you say none of them last very long anyway. There's no question baseball today is purer, but I'm not sure it's more fun than it was when motivated scoundrels could pull off various low-tech schemes.
