Youppi! Has followed in the steps of Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders (well, more accurately Tom Glavine and Kirk Mccaskill) and is a two-sport mascot. Now regularly appearing at the Bell Centre, home of the Montreal Canadiens. I’m glad he’s found work.
Right down to the ! on his jersey. I believe he is also the only mascot to ever permanently change teams (and sports). How many lists can this guy sneak onto?
I was at the game Saturday (going tonight too for some reason), and I could not ask since Mr. Met was too busy canoodling with Mrs. Met on Korean-American heritage night, which actually was in the afternoon.
Nice piece, Paul. I don't know if the Cubs have ever fielded a mascot - I don't think their 1980's ballgirl, Marla Collins, who was fired for posing for Playboy, counts as a mascot.
Well, Bill, post-Marla, the Cubs seem to have pivoted, because their present-day mascot, Clark, is an adorable and fully clothed bear who has never had so much as a salacious thought. Clark is good at waving the "W" flag after games, but is so benign that I don't think Tommy Lasorda would even have noticed him out there.
I've always liked the Hawk from St. Joes in Philly. The kid has to keep at least one wing flapping for an entire game or loses a full scholarship. It reached absurd levels in the 80s when the opposing teams mascot would attempt to stop the flaps, usually by picking a fight. Throwing punches with one hand a flapping with the other became a necessity for The Hawk who, of course, never dies.
I'd never heard of the Hawk until this comment. Amazing. The performers must be easily identifiable by their well-muscled arms. Thanks for sharing this, John.

Great stuff today Paul!
Thanks Mark! Souki's story made me wonder if Mr. Met can get into and out of a prone position. Report back if you have any intel on this...

A perfect baseball sentence. Keep your head on a swivel tonight and go Mets!

Great story Paul. Thank you for educating me… I’m adding a new word to my vocabulary thanks to you.
Ephemera is now part of my daily vocabulary.
Please report back on how you use it in a sentence!
