I’m adopting the Goose Goslin strategy, Paul - promote the thing I do well and ignore the thing I don’t do well - maybe it’ll get me into the Hall of Fame.

If you're open-minded about which Hall of Fame, I think there are some great options available.

You’re right, there are many, many Halls of Fame, Paul. Might be good column fodder. . .

I agree, making this entire comments section tax deductible!

Leonidas Lee Funkhouser… I know Larry David loves sports - just wondering if he stole Leon’s name for Curb.

Nah, I doubt it but I do find those early years of baseball names rather interesting although in one Seinfeld George picked the name “7” for a baby. You don’t find any of those good wholesome names anymore but yesterday I learned the Kardashians have a kid named Northwest… good to know in case you’re out camping & get lost.

Do they call her NW for short?

Does she have any cousins named Southeast?

And BTW Paul… I once tried finding a girl’s number by going through the phone book like you read 18,000 names. At least YOU had success in your endeavors.

TY for the mention @Yankee Stadium, appreciate it.

"Seven" does have a nice sound to it. Great callback, Jeff. "Leonidas" isn't quite there, and it puts a lot of pressure on the kid to learn how to throw a spear. Going through my list, I spotted all the cardinal directions, so that will be a mini-sode of its own at some point.

I wondered what a Kekionga was, and now I know! If you could excuse the lack of alliteration, the Braves have a stellar closer named Raisel Iglesias, who is called Iggy, but if you can’t make an exception for Richard Gossage, then certainly not for Iggy! Looking forward to watching the HR Derby tonight on Netflix, for a change.

BR shows Iglesias' nicknames as El Ciclon and Oliver. Iggy must be a very recent (and pleasing) development. I hope it sticks and one day we can welcome Iggy Iglesias to fill an irksome hole in this list.

You’re right, they started calling him that this season. Sort of like Duby for Mauricio Dubon. Not very imaginative are we? Ha!

The trend on imaginative nicknames has been sharply downward for decades now! Although I did just read that people are calling Pirates outfielder Esmerlyn Valdez "the Magician," so maybe we are on the way back.
