Dick Allen was definitely a legendary White “Sock,” for sure! If I didn’t already know this all took place in the early 70’s, the photo of Dick Allen with lamb chop sideburns confirmed it! Another interesting post, Paul.
Allen was generally appreciated as one of the most stylish players in baseball--and in the 1970s that was really saying something! Thanks for joining the singular "Sock" train, Meg. We can start a movement.
I approve of your “White Sock” creation, Paul - it beats “White Stockings” or “Pale Hose.” One of my favorite White Sox players from that era was Walt “No-Neck” Williams.
Apparently his neck actually shrank as a baby due to a mis-administered typhus injection. I'm sure his teammates didn't let that stop them in assigning a nickname. Truly a memorable White Sock.
TY Paul. Players were different then. Heck, the game was different then. No computers, no analytics. Today there are so many stats it’s like a NASA rocket launch.
