Dave Parker was awesome. Our Pirates could use someone today with that kind of oomph! Not much going on at PNC Park these days, other than Paul Skenes.

How convenient--our Cubs could use somebody like Paul Skenes... Just have your people call my people and we'll work something out.

As long as you toss in a couple of Giordano’s pies, you got a deal.

It’s a shame fans get violent to players. I can understand their reactions to their frustrations but not to the point of violence.

They should somehow react to juiced players; Consaco, A Rod, etc., but they don’t.

Far as salaries go there’s plenty players way over paid. These guys aren’t producing cures for diseases, but playing a kids game. I’ve said before it’s absurd they make in one game more than you or me in almost a year… and half that time they’re sitting.

I think their clauses should state half their salary goes to charity.

Dave definitely wasn’t respected by a few, I wonder why the fans didn’t turn in the culprits!

I also feel the HOF needs to react quickly in their decision to induct which may be a topic for another day.

Fan violence or rowdiness are obviously an interest area here. I'm always so curious to explore when and why it happens. As you note, Jeff, there's not really a consistent formula.

The Pirates actually tried to encourage fans to turn in offenders after this incident happened. I just cut it for time out of Part 2, but somebody threw a firecracker that landed on a kid that summer and the PA announcer asked fans to turn him in--he was identified and prosecuted.

It is really unfortunate that both Parker and Dick Allen were not enshrined in their lifetimes. The Hall really needs to reassess the way the Veterans Committees work with respect to living players. There should be an urgency to these cases that just isn't the same when we're looking at players from 80 years ago who are long gone.

Getting back to the White Sox disco fire… yesterday I was watching the Yankees when Michael Kay mentioned it was the anniversary. I’m glad I read about from you Paul! Thanx

I wrote a whole chapter about Disco Demolition for the book I am determined to finish this year. I’m sure I’ll get some of that material out on Project 3.18, too, but it is a saga worth the printed page.

Parker was a great for many years. Fans are such fair weather friends. Thinking of the Pirates, I was on YouTube today, and decided to watch the 1992 NLCS between the Braves and the Pirates. Really loved seeing the 9th inning with Francisco Cabrera batting in the two runs to advance to the World Series, including Sid Bream’s slide into home. Pirates had a good season in 1992. Just not as good as 1979. And Parker was able to be part of World Series championships in 1979 and 1989 (with Oakland). Looking forward to part 2!

Sid Bream--he lost his starting job to Fred McGriff one year later--on the very day of the stadium fire we covered a few weeks ago. He had a great line: “I know I’m the most likely suspect, but I swear I didn’t do it."

Very witty line. McGriff was likable right from the start!
