Well-crafted 2-parter, Paul. I knew I should have had my mother negotiate my first contract - I would be in a much better position now.

Fascinating story of how a young talent got ‘used’ in my opinion by his own mother. I understand what she was doing but that didn’t make it right.

The timing of the war is what allowed her to get away with it, but in reality I highly doubt this incident would ever repeat.

Interesting nonetheless!

I think her intentions were good--she was rightly worried about how her son would do so far from home at that age. But the solution--and I agree with you it was only possible in this one amazing instance--put him somewhere a kid had no place being, whether close to home or far away. I wonder where Orville was in these conversations, but from the records it seems clear that Naomi was doing most of the talking. All roads go through mom.

Isn't that just like a woman?? lol.... Fathers will understand my comment

Three cheers for mom, the power broker! No, seriously, Joe had no business being in the majors at that age. I wondered about Orville’s opinion, as well. Was he Caspar Milquetoast? Btw, I now know how to spell shillelaghed! Great 2-parter, Paul!

Orville is the mystery here. Perhaps a man of few words. I looked at shillelaghed several times, deciding whether or not to cut it, but what a great weird old word. I couldn't bear to part with it.
